1 oz. (Rumex acelosella). Zones 3 - 7. Sheep sorrel has long slender roots which bear one to several stems. The arrow-shaped basal leaves have long stalks and a pair of outward-flaring lobes. There are usually smaller stem leaves with shortened stalks, also. The flowers are numerous, tiny and reddish with six sepals. They grow in a long, narrow inflorescence--male and female flowers forming on separate plants.
Approximately 15,000 seeds.
Fresh Sheep Sorrel is rich in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been shown in some lab studies to increase your resistance to x-rays, purify the liver, stimulate the regeneration of fresh tissue, relieve pancreas swelling, cleanse the walls of blood vessels and strengthen the cell walls. It should be noted that vitamin A strengthens the immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells and T-Cells. It is the white blood cells and the T-Cells that destroy cancer. The fresh plant makes a good poultice for sebaceous cysts and even skin cancers and tumors. Rub fresh leaves between the hands and apply to affected area several times daily. Once outward signs of the cyst or tumor have disappeared, continue treatment for a week to ten days longer to remove any abnormal cell growth beneath the skin.
Historically Sheep sorrel juice was also taken internally for the Essiac treatment. Followed several hours later with a cleansing tea, which included burdock root, Yellow Dock root and slippery elm bark. Two ounces of fresh juice was taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Followed four to six hours later with a cleansing tea which includes 1 tsp. dried Burdock root, 1 tsp. dried Yellow Dock root and 1 tsp. Slippery Elm or Cascara Sagrada bark. This treatment was repeated every fourth day. The sheep sorrel must be used fresh, as the dried herb has no active constituent (oxalic acid) remaining. This treatment took commitment and proper timing in the administration of the fresh juice and cleansing tea.
Propagation: Sow seed in autumn or spring directly in prepared bed. Divide plants in the spring. Sheep Sorrel succeeds in most soils, preferring a moist moderately fertile well-drained soil in a sunny position. Although a plant of acid soils, it can tolerate some alkalinity. Since the herb is dioecious, male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.
