Robinia pseudoacacia Black Locust has pendulous has very fragrant white wisteria like flowers in spring; followed by flat brown black pods. This tree can grow up to 50 feet tall. Bees harvest Robinia nectar to produce a honey regarded as one of the world's finest.
The young growth has thorns. Small branches and young sapplings fall easily during storms. Some leaves yellow and fall during drought. The species forms a dense thicket and is a good plant for difficult sites. The seeldings and young trees transplants well. A legume, Black Locust fixes its own nitrogen. It is also salt tolerant, making it a good choice for coastal areas.
Propagation: Black locust seeds require scarification for good germination. Treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid for 20-50 min is most effective. Seeds can also be nicked, soaked in boiling water for several minutes, or washed in aerated cold water for 2-3 days.
