Phellinus igniarius. 1/2 lb. whole dried fruiting bodies. Traditionally used in Europe and North America as tinder to start fires and as absorbent "pads" to stop bleeding wounds. Also for a wide variety of healing applications.

Saprobic and parasitic polypore with hoof-shaped caps is found growing solitary or in groups on living or dead trunks, The hard and woody Tinder Polypore have a pale to dark brown undersurface. The polypore grows on both living and dead hardwoods, especially Birch, Maple and Poplar.

Antitumor -- A tea or tincture of the mushroom slices can be taken as a tonic for tumor inhibiting. For tea, simmer 1 cup sliced conk in a quart of water for an hour in a covered pot. Allow to cool. Pour off liquid. Simmer the sliced pieces in another quart of water for 1 hour in covered pot; cool and strain. Combine the two strained liquids. Refrigerate the liquid. Take in 1/4 cup doses in tea or other beverage once or twice daily.

Flu -- Using the above instructions, make the concentrated tea. Sip a cup of the liquid, heated, once or twice daily when. Honey and lemon may be added.

Immune Enchancer -- To help keep the immune system healthy, follow instructions for making tea in the Antitumor section above. Take 1/4 cup daily in tea or non-dairy soup.

Constituents: Linolenic and arachidonic acids, prostaglandins, ergosterolm fungisterol, isoergosterone, ergosta-7,22-dien-3-one, lignin, polysaccharides.
